Advancing Transformational Experiences: Insights from the Set & Setting Collaborative Gathering On March 22, the Set & Setting Collaborative brought together an inspiring assembly of researchers, clinicians, cultural leaders, artists, educators, and philanthropists at 1440 Multiversity. This multidisciplinary gathering aimed to explore how context and environment—commonly referred to as “set and setting”—shape transformational experiences. While the initiative has its roots in the psychedelic field, the broader mission is to apply these insights across healthcare, education, the arts, and efforts to address overall well-being. The convening was guided by a proposed North Star statement: “To better understand how set and setting enhances transformational experiences with the goal of amplifying human potential and well-being in a wide range of contexts.” With psychedelic therapies nearing regulatory approval and widespread use, understanding set and setting is essential for informing care, delivery, and training. In response, the IAM Lab has launched a collaborative initiative aimed at driving systemic change in this emerging field, ensuring best practices for set and setting. Participants engaged in dynamic discussions, reflecting on how the principles of set and setting could be woven into various societal systems. There was a resounding agreement that, while psychedelics have brought renewed attention to the importance of context, the applications extend far beyond. From healing-centered healthcare environments to transformative educational spaces and immersive artistic experiences, understanding and intentionally shaping set and setting can unlock profound growth and healing. A key takeaway from the day was the recognition of the Collaborative’s unique role in field-building. By integrating science, spirit, community, and care, the initiative is positioned to lead with integrity and purpose. The spirit of the gathering was not only to define set and setting but also to embody it—fostering a culture of collaboration and shared commitment. As the Set & Setting Collaborative moves forward, the insights and connections forged during this gathering will serve as a powerful foundation for amplifying human potential and advancing collective well-being. We sincerely appreciate our funders for making this opportunity possible. Stay tuned for further updates and opportunities to engage with this transformative work.
